The elecraft K1 is 5 Watt (QRP) 2 band CW transceiver. This unit K1# 3369
is being built with the 30 meter (10Mhz) and the 20 meter (14 Mhz) bands.
It is to be built in three sections. First the Filter Board. Then the
Front Panel Board. Lastly the RF Board.

FIRST THE FILTER BOARD

Installing the 10Mhz 30M module

Installed resistor R1 (100 oHm), the IC socket for U1, relays K1,K2 and K3
capacitors C29(.001uf), C30 (.001uf) and C27(.047uf) capacitors C1,C5 (220pf)
C2, C4 (180pf) C3(2.2pf) C11,C15 (1800pf) C12, C14 (270pf) C13 (4.7pf) C21,C23 (330pf)
C22(560pf), wound and installed L9, L10(1uh), X1 18.10 Mhz crystal


Winding inductors L9,L10 for the 30M module 18turns 1.0uh and 15turns 0.8uh L11, L12 for the 20M module
An inexpensive soldering iron will make a mini solder pot that can be used for tinning the leads

Installing the 14Mhz 20M module

Installed capacitors C6,C10 (180pf) C7, C9 (120pf) C8(1.0pf)
C16,C20 (1000pf) C17, C19 (120pf) C18 (3.3pf) C24,C26 (220pf)
C25(390pf), wound and installed L11, L12 (0.8uh), X2 22.000 Mhz crystal
Installed the ceramic resonator "Z1" and the slug tuned inductors L1-L8
also two grounding clips at either end of the PCB


Installed the connecting pins for P1, P2 and P3
and the jumper between pins 2 and 10 on J2


Installed the microprosser "U1".


Performed resistance checks "U1".

This completes the Filter board.

NOW THE FRONT PANEL

Installed the 20 pin receptacle and switches S1-S6. Resister R8 (22ohm) and
capacitor C4 (.047uf) were installed along with the 40 pin socket for U1.


Installed resistors R4, R5(10K ohms) and R11 (100K ohms) on topside of PCB
On the bottom side, installed resistor R6 (12.7K ohms 1%) R7 (3.92k ohms 1%)
Resistors R9, R10 and R19 (100k ohms), R13 (470 ohms), R12 (2.7k ohms)
Resistors R14 and R15 (1k ohm) and R16 (2.7k ohms) install capacitors C5 and C6 (.01uf)
install capacitors C1 and C2(82pf) and resistor pack RP1 (1k resistor network)
install RFC1, RFC2 (82uh) RF chokes.


Installed transistor Q1 (2N4124) and Q2 (2N7000)
Installed Voltage Regulator U4 (78L06) and
IC's U2 (MAX518), U3 (24LC04) and U5 (LM358)
Installed potentiometers R1 and R2 (10k ohms)


Installed standoff for enclosure. Crystal X1 installed with case ground. Install
D1 and D2 LED's. Checked U1 socket for cold solder joints and shorts between pins


Installed Microcontroller "U1" and LCD display


Performed resistance checks.


Installed the 10 turn potentiometer which will be the "VFO".
Installed switch buttons and the clear lens over the LCD.
Mounted the front panel in the chassis and installed the knobs

Installed corner 2-D fasteners and Relay at K1.

(a 20 position right angle connector) on the bottom of the RF board.


Lightly set Filter Board and Front Panel Board
to check alignment of J6, J7,J8 and P1 connectors.

Toroidal Transformer "T2" wound, leads tinned and installed.


Coaxial jumper from "J9 " to J10"

ALIGNMENT AND TEST PART I

Apply power and turn K1 on for LED TEST
You should see "E27"on LCD screen: ERROR CODE missing Filter Board
Tap any switch to clear the code and "E42" appears indicating "VFO" signal missing.
